6 Ways to Travel Like A Local
I love traveling. But not so much when there’s a busy itinerary, expensive tourist spots and hella crowds. Sometimes, it’s unavoidable. But other times, it’s a choice.
I like to travel like a local. When I visit Japan for multi-month trips, I always travel this way.
It’s less touristy and more authentic. Plus you learn a lot more about the actual culture.
So these are a few things I do to travel differently.

Cook Your Own Food
Everyone is a local somewhere. So, as a fellow human, you already know that locals cook at home (well, at least, sometimes).
Cooking your own food introduces you to different ingredients and local markets and helps you feel more integrated with the local culture.
So I’d say, if you can, rent a place that has a kitchen (for example, a share house or an Airbnb).
Meet Some Locals
Locals know about local things. So let’s meet some locals.
You can meet people through Meetup, traveler apps or just visiting local venues, shows and events.
There’s also language exchange or passion-based meetups (like hiking, photography, etcetera).
This is another reason I always stay at share houses in Tokyo. I always meet new people and local friends.
Learn About Your Destination
If you really want to travel like a local, then you’ll need to know how locals live.
Every spot has its own traditions and etiquette. Participating in these cultural nuances puts you in the shoes of a local (sort of).
Use the Language
Language makes travel richer.
You don’t need to get fluent either…obviously. But even learning just a few core phrases will make you travel like a true local.
Become A Regular Somewhere
Locals have their go-to spots. And when you visit the same cafe (or wherever) nearly everyday, the staff will start to recognize you.
You’ll become a regular.
Without fail, the baristas in Tokyo eventually look at me and say “hot coffee?” when I get to the register.
Skip the Tourist Spots
If you want to travel like a local, do as the locals do.
Eat at local restaurants, go for a morning run around the park, meet someone for a brunch date…travel slow.
Most locals don’t go to the touristy spots.
(nothing wrong with them—it’s all about balance, am I right?)
