PSST, YOU NEED A PHONE ABROAD
Smartphones, 24/7 internet access and AI have made traveling abroad sooooo much easier.
I never actually experienced traveling overseas without a smartphone, but I imagine it was definitely more difficult (but also, potentially a better, more authentic adventure, depending on your perspective).
But as a modern nomad, having access to the internet is pretty much essential for living. Luckily, you can set up international options (even if you’re technically a tourist).
You can set up your phone for travel abroad by just buying an eSIM (or a regular SIM) from a company like Airalo or Holafly. Both of them offer international cell service for wherever you’re traveling to.
Alternatively, you can sign up for an international plan from your local carrier. This is actually what I’ve been doing recently (I use Verizon in the US and live in Japan part-time). It’s the most convenient because there’s no additional setup or bills to think about. I just need to restart my phone after arriving in Japan.
Just pay attention to your data usage and use wifi when possible.
ACTION ITEM:
Research SIM companies and decide who you’ll use or how you’ll get phone data while traveling.
